12-14 Week Scan

This late first trimester ultrasound is usually the first detailed scan

The 12-14 Week scan is the first true structural check of the fetus, and may be the first time parents see it actually looking like a baby.

The 12-14 Week scan can be especially rewarding for parents as the whole fetus can be visualised on the screen at once, with moving limbs outlined by the amniotic fluid.

This scan provides valuable insights into your baby’s growth and development, offering reassurance and an opportunity to check for key milestones early in your pregnancy journey.

For parents who have chosen the nuchal translucency test (combined First Trimester Screening) to assess for chromosome problems, this scan is best done between 12 and 13 weeks. We will carefully measure the skin fold behind the neck, as well as check for other structural development. If your blood test results are ready, we will calculate the chance of a common chromosome problem being present in your baby, and inform you during the appointment.
For parents who do not wish to have chromosome screening, or who have chosen to have NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Test), this scan is best done between 13 and 14 weeks, to give the most detailed information about the baby’s developing structure.

It is important to know that between 12 and 14 weeks the detail visible varies greatly, for reasons related to both fetus and mother. The baby almost doubles in size, and becomes much busier, which can both help and hinder our examination.

More information about NIPT can be found via some of the sites links in our Resources page.
