A gynaecological ultrasound or pelvic ultrasound may be requested for various reasons.
Often they are needed for more than one purpose at the same time.
Some common reasons for a gynaecology ultrasound are:
A Pelvic Ultrasound can be performed at any stage of the cycle. Generally, the best time for an ultrasound is from day 5 to day 11 of the menstrual cycle (counting from the first day of your period) especially if there is bleeding between your periods.
We will need to know the first day of the last menstrual period, as closely as you can. If you are using contraceptive hormones (including the pill, Implanon and hormone IUD’s like Mirena), the stage of the cycle is not important for your ultrasound. However if you are on a contraceptive pill, it could be helpful to know the name of the pill you are taking.
If you are experiencing bleeding all or most of the time, we recommend that you do not delay your ultrasound appointment.
If you are using menopausal hormones (MHT or vaginal estrogen), do not stop purely for the ultrasound. If anything, they can make the ultrasound easier for you.
Preparing for Gynaecological Ultrasounds
We usually use both abdominal and vaginal ultrasounds for gynaecological scans, as the two methods provide complementary views.

A Deep Endometriosis scan requires internal (vaginal) ultrasound, to reach the common places for these deposits to grow. If internal scans are not suitable for you, just book a regular pelvic scan and we will look for endometriosis as much as we are able. The bowel preparation is not so important for abdominal-only scans.
