If you’re experiencing delays in falling pregnant, your doctor may request a gynaecological scan to assess your anatomy, check ovarian egg activity, or detect any underlying conditions.

They have the experience to recognise the wide variety of normal ovarian appearances, to reduce the need for ‘second check’ scans.

An abdominal ultrasound provides a broad overview and works best with a full bladder, while a vaginal ultrasound (performed after bladder emptying) offers greater detail. The vaginal scan uses a slender probe and is gentler than cervix examination with a speculum (duck-bill instrument). For fertility concerns, a vaginal ultrasound is usually recommended.

• Bladder Preparation: Drink 2 glasses of liquid about an hour before your scan for a moderately full bladder.
• Cycle Timing: If you menstruate regularly, schedule your scan between days 5 and 11 of your cycle. Track your cycle and let us know the first day of your last period.
• Personal History: Be prepared to share details about your period length, cycle frequency, hormone use, and any past surgeries.
